Secondary School

This is a list and description of the introductory educational sessions available for Secondary School students.

As students grow into adulthood and are able to make their own purchasing choices, it is important to make them aware of how their choices can have negative consequences for the environment and their own health and wellbeing.

We understand that high school students have a pretty heavy workload and so we can be reasonably flexible in adapting to suit timetables and schedules. Our Introduction To Plastic Pollution presentation can be held for a large number of students in a hall or auditorium and we will often then work with a specific class, year group or Environmental Leader team who can begin putting the ideas into practice.

Following these presentations, students and staff are often quite motivated to learn more and to begin exploring ways to bring about positive change within their school.

We have created a range of Follow-up Activities designed to build upon this education providing another level of knowledge, understanding and empowerment. A key goal of these activities is for students to begin to plan and carry out one or more initiatives to reduce litter, single-use plastic and improve waste management practices

Technical Equipment

We will require the school to supply one of the following options. Please liaise closely with us as it is vital that ALL students can see and hear the presentation adequately.

  • Projector/screen & PA system (and microphone if more than 50 students)
  • Or IWB with adequate audio
  • Or Large TV Screen with HDMI input and with
  • adequate audio.

Introduction to Plastic Pollution

Powerpoint Presentation

Duration: 90 – 110 minutes

Our “story-style” interactive presentation will educate students about the global problem of plastic pollution, the scale, causes and its impact on our environment, wildlife and human health. It includes powerful images, video, facts and encourages interaction. Students will learn how their purchasing choices can help or hinder our efforts to address plastic pollution. We demonstrate how simple actions both individually and collectively can make a big difference and cause a ripple effect. We emphasise the importance of reducing or eliminating our use of disposable plastic as well as litter control and intelligent waste management. Practical solutions are offered and schools are given access to a range of ongoing projects and initiatives. The session also includes a Q & A discussion

Additional Fun Elements

Since we are dealing with a pretty serious issue, we feel that it’s important to lighten the atmosphere with some fun activities. Depending upon the time available, we would love to include one or more extra elements to make the event more enjoyable and memorable.

  • Ocean Trivia Round
  • Boomerang Bags Fashion Parade
  • The Plastic Ninja Pledge

Conscious Consumption

Powerpoint Presentation

Duration: Approximately 60 to 70 minutes

This presentation re-caps the previous presentation and draws attention to unnecessary packaging, over-packaging, “invisible” packaging in supply chains in addition to planned and perceived obsolescence. We show students how they can reduce waste and plastic pollution through consumer awareness, daily choices in addition to creative projects and initiatives. This session concludes with a Q & A discussion.

Film Screening and Workshop

Powerpoint Presentation

Duration: Approximately 60 to 70 minutes

After a brief presentation, we run a short film (20 min) or a series of very short films (5 min each) related to plastic pollution and waste. We facilitate a Q & A discussion followed by a workshop where students, in groups, can brainstorm, plan and present solutions based ideas and initiatives.

The Plastic Pollution Solutions presentations were interesting, thought-provoking, age-appropriate and relevant to all these Key Learning Areas. They address the Sustainability education priority of Ausvels. Students were fully engaged during all presentations, several asked questions and some were prompted by what they learned to undertake action on the issue of plastics in the ocean.

Ross Bramley - Principal, Wonthaggi Secondary College, Victoria

Our school heartily recommends the presentation from Plastic Pollution Solutions. Anthony's presentation clearly comes from a genuine personal passion for protecting our environment. His session was easily able to engage hundreds of high school students, with relatable and compelling information which ranged from big-picture evaluation of pollution on a global level, right down to practical advice for individuals. Teachers and students were engaged in discussion and left with powerful knowledge which will help control our growing pollution crises.

Leon Close - Ulladulla High School, NSW

Anthony conducted an interactive and engaging presentation. The presentation and trivia quiz gave our students greater awareness regarding the world’s marine environment and the effects of plastic pollution on marine life. He was also able to encourage the community to develop an interest in our natural surroundings and how to protect the environment. I would recommend organising The Plastic Pollution Solutions to visit your school.

Nicola Winter - Teacher, The Alpine School For Student Leadership, Dinner Plains Campus, Vic.

Thank you for the wonderful presentation you held for the year 8 Personal Development Day. The students were engaged...and stayed focused for the whole way through your 90 minute presentation...The short videos and slides will help these students learn ways to help our environment within the Gold Coast Community, beaches and even within our own school grounds. I know I left the room wanting to make a difference and I’m sure most of the students also felt that empowerment.

Peter Carroll, Head of Year 8, Marymount College, Qld

It is fantastic for them to hear about how plastic and litter are destroying the world’s oceans, particularly from someone other than their teachers. What you talked to them about really reinforces what our school is all about and the students really enjoyed listening to you speak. The trivia questions at the end were also great as it enabled the students to put their learning into place and for this age of students..

Hollie Fuhrmann - Teacher, The Alpine School, Snowy River, Vic.

Hello Anthony. You presented to us at The Alpine School about the problems of plastic pollution and inspired us. We are now thinking of teaching primary school kids the same thing and were wondering if it would be possible.
